Professor Xiang Zhang is the 16th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in July 2018. Prior to joining HKU, he was the inaugural Ernest Kuh Endowed Chair Professor and Director of the Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Academia Sinica and foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
His research in optical metamaterials was selected by Times Magazine as “Top 10 Scientific Discoveries in 2008”. He was a recipient of many awards including the NSF CAREER Award, Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship, Fitzroy Medal, Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award, Julius Springer Prize, Max Born Award and AC Eringen Medal.
Professor Zhang received his PhD from UC Berkeley, MS from the University of Minnesota and MS/BS from Nanjing University, China.
